Grade 9 Science Lesson 1

Before we begin this year I would like to give you a little background on who I am outside of the science lab: Crazy Teacher
I also would like you to take a look at some of the following websites which are pretty cool, informative and a great way to help understand this course.

Gr. 9 Science Academic - Safety and Lab Equipment


UNIT 1 - SAFETY

Before using anything in the science lab always check the label to ensure the appropriate safety precautions are taken

There are 2 types of safety symbols:

1. HHPS 2. WHMIS

(Hazardous household Product Symbols) (Workplace Hazardous Materials Information System)

Using your textbook name the following symbols:
Differentiate between the following symbols:

Red Hexagon
Orange Diamond
Yellow Triangle

Importance of Safety in the Lab
-Prevention of injury to yourself

-Prevention of injury to others
-Maintain equipment

Safety Rules:
1. Know the location and proper use of equipment.
(safety goggles, eye wash station, broken glass container, first-aid kit, fire extinguishers …)

2. Inform of any allergies, medical conditions, or physical impairments that may result in a dangerous situation.

3. Always read the procedure of an investigation/lab before you start!

4. Wear safety goggles and protective clothing. (tie back hair, remove dangling jewelry, wear only closed toe shoes – no sandals)

5. Ensure all potentially dangerous equipment/ materials are out of the way and secure when carrying out an investigation.

6. Work in pairs or groups – never alone!
